What Is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for a group of chronic lung diseases primarily chronic bronchitis and emphysema that cause airflow obstruction and breathing difficulties. COPD is most commonly caused by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, but can also result from exposure to air pollutants, chemical fumes, or dust.

Symptoms of COPD

- Persistent, chronic cough (often producing mucus)
- Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Fatigue and low energy
- Unintended weight loss (in advanced stages)

Symptoms often develop slowly and worsen over time. Many people don't realize they have COPD until the disease is already moderate to severe.

COPD Stages

COPD is classified in four stages (GOLD staging) based on how severely airflow is limited:
- Stage 1 (Mild): Mild airflow limitation; may have chronic cough and mucus production
- Stage 2 (Moderate): Worsening airflow; shortness of breath during exertion
- Stage 3 (Severe): Further worsening; significant impact on quality of life
- Stage 4 (Very Severe): Very limited airflow; life-altering symptoms
