Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis commonly known as the stomach flu is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that can cause significant discomfort and disruption to your daily life. At Vitology Health, we provide prompt evaluation and treatment to help you recover quickly and prevent complications such as dehydration.

What Is Gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is typically caused by a viral, bacterial, or parasitic infection. Despite being called the "stomach flu," it is not related to influenza. It spreads easily through contaminated food or water, or through contact with an infected person.

Common Causes

- Viral infections (norovirus, rotavirus most common)
- Bacterial infections (Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter)
- Parasitic infections (Giardia)
- Contaminated food or water

Symptoms of Gastroenteritis

- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea (watery, non-bloody in most cases)
- Stomach cramps and pain
- Low-grade fever
- Headache and muscle aches
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue

Symptoms typically last 1–3 days for viral gastroenteritis but can persist longer with bacterial or parasitic causes.

When to See a Doctor

You should seek medical care if you experience:

- Blood in your vomit or stool
- High fever (above 102°F)
- Symptoms lasting more than 3 days
- Inability to keep any fluids down
- Severe abdominal pain

How We Treat Gastroenteritis

- Clinical evaluation to determine the cause and severity of your illness
- Hydration assessment and guidance oral rehydration strategies and IV fluids if needed
- Medication management anti-nausea, anti-diarrheal medications, or antibiotics when appropriate
- Dietary recommendations for recovery (bland foods, avoiding triggers)
- Testing when needed stool cultures or blood work to identify bacterial or parasitic causes
